Bolton prepare Coyle approach

Bolton will make an official request to Burnley to speak to their manager Owen Coyle about the current vacancy at the Reebok Stadium on Monday, sources have told Press Association Sport.

The Clarets are bracing themselves for an imminent approach from Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside, whom Press Association Sport understands has already sounded out Coyle about a move at a meeting in Glasgow on Sunday.

It appears Coyle is keen to return to the club where he enjoyed two and a half seasons as a player but for that to happen Bolton will have to come up with more than £3million in compensation. That clause was inserted into the Burnley manager's contract when he signed a 12-month extension to his existing three-year deal in the summer, having turned down boyhood club Celtic.

Coyle cools Bolton speculation

Burnley manager Owen Coyle has no interest in leaving Turf Moor to become Gary Megson's successor at Bolton Wanderers.

Coyle spent part of his playing career with the Trotters but is happy with his current job in charge of the Clarets.

He said: "It is a fantastic job for someone out there but my focus is on doing the best against MK Dons this weekend.

"I have had speculation time and time again but, as always, I am concentrating on the job in hand."

Meanwhile, joint Bolton caretaker manager Chris Evans does not want the Reebok Stadium job on a permanent basis.

Evans and head coach Steve Wigley are taking charge of the side for the weekend FA Cup third round clash with Lincoln City.

Evans said: "I will not be applying for this job. I have no intention of being the manager of Bolton Wanderers. But equally I would like to feel I am professional enough to do the best possible job I can during the time given to me.

"Steve and I come from similar backgrounds and have similar ideas. We have work to do and will continue to do that as best we can.

"I am surprised to be in this position. Gary called me yesterday with the news. I am disappointed as well as he gave me an opportunity to come here. But the decision was made by people over and above us.

"The issues with regards to the fans does not help. But now is the time to look forward. I have a professional job to do. I am under contract and will do whatever job is asked of me to the best of my ability.

"The remit we have is that we act in the best interests of the club until a new manager comes in so we are well prepared for each game."

Bolton Wanderers 3-3 Manchester City - Match Report

Carlos Tevez saved ten-man Manchester City against neighbours Bolton Wanderers in a thrilling derby clash at the Reebok Stadium.

Mark Hughes' side looked to be heading for defeat when, trailing 3-2, Craig Bellamy was given his marching orders in controversial circumstances on 65 minutes.

But the Argentina hitman struck a wonderful 77th-minute equaliser to earn the visitors an eighth draw in nine Premier League games.

Wanderers looked anything but a side who had lost five of their previous six games, as they flew out of the blocks.

And the hosts were ahead on 11 minutes when Ivan Klasnic struck from close range when Chung-Yong Lee's shot took a deflection off Sylvinho into the Croatian's path.

City were level on 28 minutes though when Tevez's effort from the edge of the area clipped Tamir Cohen to wrongfoot Jussi Jaaskelainen.

That goal galvanised the big-spending visitors and Gareth Barry wasted a great chance when he drilled wide moments later.

But it was Bolton who went back in front two minutes before the interval when defender Gary Cahill curled home a wonderful strike from 20 yards.

But the hosts couldn't hold on to their lead after Micah Richards drove on to Bellamy's delightful pass to finish off a flowing City move in first-half injury time.

The goals continued after the restart when Klasnic reacted superbly to volley home Davies' flick-on from Paul Robinson's cross on 53 minutes.

The game then turned even more in Bolton's favour when Bellamy was dismissed. The City forward was booked for a dive and then, presumably, must have said something to referee Mark Clattenburg because a red followed immediately afterwards.

But the outstanding Tevez came to the rescue when he rifled home with just 13 minutes remaining to extend City's 11-game unbeaten run.

Megson issues Bolton warning

Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson has warned his players to buck their ideas up after a run of five Premier League games without a win.

The Trotters have dropped to 19th place in the Premier League as a result of their slump and Megson is demanding an improvement in performances.

He told the Bolton News: "There comes a time when you can't keep chatting on about having two home games, so we have an advantage, or being away from home, or playing a team from the bottom three.

"We have got a few players who are not delivering what I know they can deliver for whatever reason.

"That's why we are where we are and we have got to change all that."

Focus crucial warns Megson

Gary Megson has called on his Bolton players to show the same desire they produced in the final quarter of the 2-1 defeat at Wolves for 90 minutes in the future.

Megson was unhappy with his side's display in the first 70 minutes at Molineux, but was also far from impressed by the manner of Wolves' opening goal.

Jody Craddock broke the deadlock in only the third minute to put the visitors on the back foot, although the veteran defender appeared to be offside when he latched on to Christophe Berra's flick.

A rueful Megson said: "The linesman made a mistake which put us under pressure right from the off.

"Saying that we should never have let the ball to have been played into that position and, the offside decision apart, we should have dealt with the situation better.

"It took us until the last 20 minutes to find the tempo and from then on we put Wolves under the cosh. We created five or six good chances but we needed to have played like that throughout the entire game.

"It was a disappointing dressing room because we know we could have done better, and we need to start showing that.

"If we can play and show the desire that we displayed in the last quarter of the game for the full 90 minutes, we will get those results.

"We know that it is going to be close right throughout the season regardless of who is in the bottom three. We are not far away but we need to start picking up those points."

Bolton 0-2 Blackburn - Match report

Sam Allardyce's Blackburn Rovers players gave their absent manager something to cheer about as they claimed their first away points of the season at Bolton Wanderers.

The Rovers boss will have heart surgery this week and was not at the game to see his team continue their Reebok hoodoo over his former club.

David Dunn's superb 32nd-minute opener and a Sam Ricketts own goal after half-time mean Wanderers have now not beaten their derby rivals at home in ten attempts.

Matt Taylor wasted a great chance to give the hosts the lead when he failed to convert Gavin McCann's cross on 13 minutes.

At the other end, Gael Givet headed over Jussi Jaaskelainen, but Gary Cahill got back to clear off the goal-line.

Taylor then saw his 30-yard free-kick deflect off Ryan Nelsen's outstretched leg and crash against the crossbar on 31 minutes.

And less than 60 seconds later Blackburn were ahead. Paul Robinson's long throw sent Franco di Santo sprinting away down the right. He picked out Jason Roberts, who played it into Dunn's path and the midfielder curled his shot beautifully into the top corner.

Taylor wasted another great opportunity on the stroke of half-time when he inexplicably headed over McCann's corner from two yards out.

El Hadji Diouf nearly came back to haunt his former club immediately after the restart, but McCann did superbly to head his volley off the line.

Blackburn surged forward in search of a second goal and Jaaskelainen denied di Santo before McCann was forced to clear off his own line again, this time from a Roberts header.

But Rovers went further ahead on 73 minutes when Ricketts headed Brett Emerton's crossfield ball into an empty net after Jaaskelainen had come rushing from his line in a dreadful mix-up.

Old Firm proposal rejected

Premier League chairman have voted overwhelmingly against a proposal to allow Celtic and Rangers to join the English top-flight.

Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside had table a proposal which would allow the two Scottish Premier League giants to join a new two-tiered league encompassing up to 40 teams.

However at a meeting of existing league chairman, the idea was rejected after being branded: "not desirable or viable".

"Bolton Wanderers submitted a discussion paper detailing ideas concerning the restructuring of the Premier League into two tiers with the inclusion of Celtic and Rangers," read a Premier League statement.

"The clubs welcomed the additional input into an ongoing process, however, they were of the opinion that bringing Celtic and Rangers into any form of Premier League set-up was not desirable or viable.

"The other relevant ideas contained within Bolton's paper will now be taken forward as part of the wider strategic review being undertaken by the Premier League since November 2008 with the aim of providing recommendations before December 2010."

Several current Premier League managers, including Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill and Everton's David Moyes had recently backed the proposal to allow Celtic and Rangers to make the move.

The idea had received a hostile reception when it was first aired at a previous meeting of chairmen earlier in the year.

Megson keeps faith with Cahill

Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson has admitted that Gary Cahill endured a nightmare afternoon during Saturday's 5-1 capitulation at Aston Villa but has backed the defender to learn from the experience.

Playing against his former club, the 23-year-old was at fault for two of Villa's goals but was still included in Fabio Capello's England squad for Saturday's friendly with Brazil in Qatar.

Megson said: "It wasn't a good game for Gary but he wasn't alone. For the second goal, Gary needed to ship it out for a corner and defend it from there, but it's gone now.

"The lad's a good player and you don't get where he's got to playing like that."

Meanwhile, Danny Shittu has had to drop out of Nigeria's squad for this weekend's World Cup qualifier against Kenya because of injury.

The Super Eagles need to win in Nairobi and hope Tunisia fail to beat Mozambique to qualify for next year's World Cup finals in South Africa.

Megson blasts lame Trotters

Manager Gary Megson was far from happy after seeing his Bolton Wanderers side swept aside 5-1 at Aston Villa.

The Trotters gave one of their worst displays in a long time at Villa Park and Megson was unable to find anything positive to take from the game.

He said: "I feel sorry for our goalkeeper because he played well and did not deserve to get beaten five times.

"John Carew was strong and lively, but every one of their players looked close to their best. Of our outfield players, none got close to what I would expect from them.

"If we can't sort it out with what we have already got, then we will need to change things a bit.

"We had talked before the game about Villa starting at a high tempo and scoring goals at the start of games and just after half-time on a regular basis.

"We said we needed to match them but it didn't happen and the manner of the third goal summed it up for us.

Megson not concerned by losses

Gary Megson insists Bolton Wanderers are moving in the right direction, despite the club's parent company reporting a loss over the last financial year.

Burnden Leisure announced on Wednesday that losses went up from £8million to £13.2million, even though there was an improvement in turnover by 3% to £51.8million.
Megson admitted the news was concerning but said he had not been told there would be any less money to spend on new players as a consequence.

"When those reports come out it is nothing to do with us, we don't have an input into it. I don't particularly read it, although I listen to what people tell me," Megson said.
"You don't want to see your company losing money. I don't get involved with it at all, but if the club is losing money, then it's not a nice thing to see.

"But I do know that on the football side of it, we have taken a side from the bottom of the table to mid-table and not spent a huge amount of money."

Fuming Megson slams referee

Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson could not understand why Jlloyd Samuel was sent off in Saturday's 4-0 home defeat to Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Samuel tripped Didier Drogba in the penalty area just before half-time, resulting in a straight red for the Bolton Wanderers full-back, and Frank Lampard duly sent Jussi Jaaskelainen the wrong way from the spot.

But the decision infuriated Megson, who said: "It was a soft penalty, I have seen them given and not given.

"Samuel didn't do anything wrong other than to try to get at the ball, I have no problem with Drogba, who took the ball across his body and there was going to be contact.

"The referee had a decision to make, and when you get Peter Walton, penalties and Bolton there is only one thing that is going to happen.

"Any of the top-six teams playing against ten men and with a lead would not quite have a stroll, but they would do the right things at the right time and that is what Chelsea did.

"They made nine changes from midweek, and they had plenty to spare.

"But there has to be some reality here, we were playing against a club who have spent £200million on players, they are one of the best teams in the world and they will have an advantage.

"They looked very strong, very motivated and they wanted to win everything put in front of them.

"We may have been beaten 4-0, but we were terrific. We matched them in their diamond midfield formation, we didn't struggle against it."
